Pterradacto site

Just found a link to Pterradacto's site. I strongly recommend that Primal Rage CD which I believe was originally a tour only cd. Lots of substantial songs there, including "Sunsets and Waterfalls." I didn't see it in Pterra's store just yet, but it is available on Khule's site.

Dave Dub interview digginmusic.blogspot.com

Read the new interview with Dave Dub courtesy of the Diggin' Music Blog.

DM:
Any valuable advice you might have collected over the years for aspiring MC's out there?

DD:
Stay away from fake, 6 faced people, style the way you want to, don't do hard drugs and get all the pussy, money and spirituality that you can...

DM:
Dave, you’re a busy man and your time’s highly appreciated. Please forgive the long-winded questions and thanks again. Do you have any last words, shouts, or F.U.’s?

DD:
Yeah, fuck all you faggots that front. Dave Dub and the Sutter Cain Gang don't even exist.

nocando vs. buddha tai at scribble jam 2005 video

Nocando. If you haven't heard the name before, you will.

Nocando is probably most well known for his prowess as a battle rapper, and was this years westcoast representative at Scribble Jam. He's also been referred to as "the future of the Blowed," and was recently featured on the 10th Anniversary Blowed Compilation with his crew Customer Service.

We had been hearing about Nocando for well over a year before we finally had a chance to peep his Impatient EP, and some choice unreleased tracks. In an age of over-hype, he was definitely a breath of fresh air, one that lived up to all the talk.

Check Nocando out on the new Ellay Khule album "In My Own World", on Joe Dub's "Pooretry" or on Subtitle's "Young Dangerous Heart"

new Joe Dub interview at hiphopcore.net

Quite the informative Joe Dub interview! This one covers everything from growing up in San Francisco, to Westcoast Workforce reunion rumours, thoughts on the evolution of the undergound rap scene, living in Hawaii, detailed news about his up and coming project with Ellay Khule, anecdotes, stories, and quips.

"Around 86 or so I remember listening to KPOO (local hip-hop radio station in the bay) when they had dj's like ..KK...Marcus Clemens and Dan the Automator. One night I remember they played Eric B and Rakim "Check out my Melody," Mixmaster Gee "The Manipulator" (check artist), BDP-"My 9mm Goes Bang" and Just Ice "Latoya" in succession. I recorded that show still have that tape in fact. Anyways, once the show ended at that moment I knew I wanted to do this shit seriously. The beats moved me but I was more trying to rap then. It wasn't till 90 or 91 when I into making beats.

As far as records that inspired me rapwise? I was a fan of all of the old stuff. Flash, Kurtis Blow, Spoonie G, but it was the progressive shit that had me buggin. Anything that Kurtis Mantronik did..Just Ice (dopest mc of all time imo)...T LA Rock...all that...Schooly D was like a surrogate father to me as a child. Quite the role model!!! hahahahah!!" [Rest of the article....]

Many thanks to pseudo for his non-standard questions, and to the great French e-zine hiphopcore.net for their support!

mingering mike 45 and book!

Posted by Secret Chimp:

I'm very happy to announce that I just signed a book contract for a Mingering Mike book!

It'll primarily be an art book, but also included will be text written by myself, Neil Strauss who wrote the NYT article last year, and Jane Livingston, who wrote the seminal book "Black Folk Art in America" in the early 80s.

It'll be published by Princeton Architectural Press , a small publishing company which puts out really beautiful books. Put simply, this book is going to be very, very dope. We anticipate that it will be released some time next summer.

ALSO, the website (mingeringmike.com) is up and running. Big BIG thanks to Delay who did a fantastic job with it (and who put up with my anal revisions like a champ).

On the site there's a gallery where you can check out album covers, 45 labels, and even listen to some Mingering recordings. Be sure to sign up for updates so that we can let you know about any new developments.

AND THERE'S MORE! Stay tuned for a Mingering Mike 45 to be released in collaboration with none other than our bad ass Vanguard Squad. All of the artwork will be original, even the labels. It'll be just what he dreamed of when he made the cardboard record. Big thanks to Bambouche for all his help in transferring the reels and in offering to put out the 45.

Mike's beside himself with all of this and can't believe any of this happening. I can't tell you how good it feels to tell him about all the interest in his work and in the projects people are proposing. His face lights up every time.

mingering mike history

We here at the Asita blog have been following the Mingering Mike story since it initially broke last year. For those who are unfamiliar with the tale of Mingering Mike, his is a fascinating story of loss and redemption, and dreams that refuse to die.

As the story goes, a team of crate diggers unearthed a stockpile of "records" from a flea market in Washington.

"I went to a flea market and there was a huge record collection there, at least 20 boxes, " Mr Hadar said, recalling the morning discovery. "I was going through that very happily when I came across this box full of strange hand-painted album covers. I realized they were fake and was about to put them back, but then I looked at them more closely.

Pulling the records out of the sleeves, he was surprised to find that htey were made not of vinyl but of cardboard. Each had been cut in the shape of a record, with grooves and a hand-lettered label painted on. Nearly all the albums were credited to an unknown black musician by the name of Mingering Mike, and dated from 1968 to 1976.

The front covers were intricately painted to look like classic funk albums; on the spines were titles and fake catalog numbers; the backs had everything from liner notes to copyright information to original logos; the inner sleeve was often a shopping back meticulously taped together to hold a record; and some actually opened to reveal a beautiful gatefold sleeve. A few albums had even been covered in shrink-wrap and bore price stickers and labels with apocryphal promotional quotes.

What Mr. Hadar found was a cache of seemingly nonexistant music: soundtracks to imaginary films, instrumental albums, a benefeit album for sickle cell anema..."

"Alot of times flea-market vendors acquire their wares from a storage facility that's auctioning off the possessions of someone who hasn't paid their bills," Mr Beylotte said. "So we're used to digging through these windows into perseonal lives through records'

To make a long story short, Hadar and Beylotte took it upon themselves to find Mingering Mike and reunite him with his possessions. It turns out he was actually an aspiring musician in the 60's and 70's, and these covers were his dreams. Dreams of groups that were in his imagination. I think we can all relate to that. Since then, the interest in this story has taken on a life of it's own.

I encourage you to read the NY Times article for the FULL STORY

Lynn Ness 12" feat. Sach! Download the mp3

From the debut 12" release on
New Medina for bay area producer Lynn Ness. In stores now! Features joints with Yesh (Siah & Yeshua), L*Roneous and Sach!

Peep the full mp3 of Droppin' Jew-els feat. Sach

Snippet of Ain't 2 Much feat. Yesh

Snippet of S. Step feat. L*Ron

The debut release from San Francisco Bay Area producer Lynn Ness is ripe with the new flavors people are craving, mixed with the time-tempered sensibility of a golden-age classic.

Yesh (Head Bop Music, Siah & Yeshua) sets things off on "Ain't 2 Much," an up-tempo track that deals with a retrospect of music and life. This is followed by the down-low feel of L*Roneous (Double Life, Dreamweavers) on "S. Step" and is rounded out nicely by the piano-laced "Droppin Jew-els" featuring Sach (The Nonce). Cuts on all three tracks are handled by Age. Vinyl all features instrumentals...nice!

Giovanni states "It´s ok L.A. i´m on top of it" which should calm down anyone in Cali that are a little bit worried. Then he raps on about a lot of other interesting things for 5 minutes. The record is self produced by Subtitle.

subtitle interview on bstwst.com

New Subtitle interview via:
http://www.bstwst.com/

"
Things have changed since you’ve got this deal with GSL, you are much more exposed and requested. Did your conception of making music also change ?

Subtitle : Yeah, somewhat. I decided to take the approach to writing, producing and recording seriously instead of my old work where I just hit record and did whatever. Now I do the same thing, but on purpose…. People seem to like what’s going on, which is a blessing. I still have to do new things (new to me anyway) so I try not to insult the people’s intelligence while indulging in my pursuits."

BTWST.com covers much of the same ground that we cover here at the Asita Blog, with a strong focus on westcoast underground music. The only difference is that they are based in France and update more frequently. Recommended!

accepting submissions for skateboard book

Hello All:

My friend Rudy Bazorda, author of Manifesto -- Truth About Skateboarding and myself, Travis Jensen, author of Left-Handed Stories, have joined forces and are collaborating on an anthology book about skateboarding entitled, No Comply…Skateboarding Speaks on Authority.

“Due to conflicts of interest with police, property owners, security guards and everyday civilians, skateboarders inevitably develop a unique perception of authority. We want to know how your experiences with authority figures in the streets have influenced your attitude towards so-called democratic society. Where does mainstream society fail hardest with skateboarders and other outcasts? What do you think accounts for general municipality reluctance to accommodate skateboarding? What are the effects of irresponsible authorities on young people? How is your perception of authority in other countries compared to here in America?”

You get the idea…

We are currently accepting submissions for this book, which is scheduled to be released in January ’06 under Rudy’s publishing company, Fun Not Fame Productions©. The deadline for submissions is October 10th. Please click the following link below for more information on this project as well as the submission guidelines.

http://www.funnotfame.org/nocomply.htm

Please feel free to e-mail editors@funnotfame.com or myself (thesfmasher@yahoo.com) for more info on this project.

Thanks and we look forward to hearing from you soon!

sf masher interviews chris pastras and jason lee of stereo skateboards

Asita co-conspirator, Travis Jensen, aka the SF Masher recently interviewed friends Chris Pastras and Jason Lee, for the Spanish magazine STAF. In honor, of my discovery of Jason Lee's new sitcom "My Name Is Earl" here is a transcript of the interview!

Chris Pastras and Jason Lee Interview for STAF Magazine
By Travis Jensen
Photo courtesy of Isaac Mckay Randozzi

In 1992, skateboard legends Chris Pastras and Jason Lee joined forces and started Stereo Skateboards. This legendary company, which drew heavily on the influence of jazz and art from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, helped pave the way for modern day skateboarding with the release of their first video in 1993 entitled, Visual Sound. The skateboarding, art, and production in this video was far ahead of its time and is now considered a skateboard classic. read the rest , sfmasher site , stereo skateboards
