ARCC01 - Ellay Khule / Cali Classics

I was about to put this Ellay Khule/Cali Classics 45 up on discogs.com for fun, when I discovered that it was already up there. Who is this Sarin07 character? He is all knowing!

Many thanks to @emynd for helping me with the video and to all our homies who have been supporting. It's truly humbling. Just wait for what we have in store for Asita Recordings and Cali Classics this year. More follow-through in 2010!

I Need That Record - documntary [video]

"I Need That Record" is a promising documentary about the closing of Thrash, a 25 year old independent record store that specialized in metal and rock vinyl. Consolidation (see: Walmart), greed, and technology are all cited as reasons for the closure. They eventually get pushed out by a print shop. Sadly this is part of a wider trend in America which threatens not only record stores, but all small businesses, in turn dissolving a real sense of community.

Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth who has been in 480242304827 music documentaries over the years, does not miss his opportunity here. Visit the blog for more info about screenings.

Dub Echoes - documentary [video]

http://www.dubechoes.com/

Although I'm not terribly pleased with the soundtrack, which mostly features new artists, the screen shots alone beg a second look. Will post a list of our favorite dub albums with some clips soon.

In the meantime check out the music of our friends BR. The group hails from the tropical jungles of Hilo, Hawaii, and is the evil genius of two brothers who produce some of the rawest live instrumental dub we've heard in awhile. We hope that they grace us with an album in the near future!

Luke Sick from Sacred Hoop/Grand Invincible interview!

“Grand Invincible was formed under the philosophy that hip hop as an artform was best served under the technological limitations of the late-80s and early-90s. Armed with only an AKAI MPC 2000, two turntables, a mixer, a microphone, and a diggin’ ass record collection with the intention of making the most out of the least.”

The homie Jeff laced us with this really excellent interview he did with Luke Sick of Sacred Hoop and now Grand Invincible.

The interview covers tons of ground with ample coverage of Luke's musical history and influences, along with back stories of specific songs and projects. Eventually touching on the subject of Brougham Luke's Warner Brother's side project, and all of the headaches that come with a major label signing.

I was impressed with the questions asked and was particularly intrigued to hear Luke mention a fascination with old school recording techniques. I think as true lovers of music, most of us can identify with geeking out on those kinds of details!

"Ask the Dust" is a quality listen from front to back and probably a little different from what we've come to expect from a traditional Hoop record. While I too love the grimey, drugs and party shit, this is equally refreshing. By the way you can get the very limited copy of the cd with comic book cover for CHEAP ($6) at sofarwest.net.

I don't know how long the link will be viable so get it while you can!

The 11th Hour - documentary

trailer

"The 11th hour is the last moment when change is possible"

Though the messenger seems like an unlikely choice, producer/host Leonardo Dicaprio, seems sincerely invested in understanding and investigating solutions toward a more sustainable future.

I will be screening the movie this weekend and let you know what I think. For the record I found Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" eye opening but dull and felt the shifting between his personal life and global warming issues disjointed. I'm looking forward to how the 11th Hour measures up. I was impressed with several points raised in the trailer(s) which spoke directly to concrete reasons why we should care, encouraging solutions rather than apathy.

1-Though we talk about saving the environment the truth is that nature will continue. It is our HUMAN survival and future which hangs in the balance.
2-We vote with every dollar we spend. Support consciously.
3-Using Youtube to it's best benefit by allowing viewers to respond with their own videos is an excellent community building tool.

As Lofa pointed out "Earth Hour" is tonight. Turn off your lights between 8-9 PM!

Joe Dub at Trip The Lights (video)

Here's a short youtube video of Joe performing "Mic Theatre" from his album with Factor, Live in 75. The Sideroad crew along with Kirby Dominant are here in the Islands on a mini-tour, and this was from their set at the Trip the Lights Beatroot Championships.

If anyone has more video or photo footage please send it our way. I ran out of batteries and lost a bunch of the footage that was on my camera. :( You can send any footage to asitarecordings@hotmail.com.

Thanks to all those that came out and stayed for the performance. It was a really hype set and all around beautiful night.

Bored Stiff - Media [video,mp3]

Bored Stiff is coming back with that signature San Francisco flavor and the new album, if this track is any indication, seems to stick with exactly what works...jazzy summer time beats and rhymes about the best parts of city life. I've actually heard an early version of the album and can safely say that if you loved the old albums, you'll be just as excited about the new one. I didn't have a track listing but the Z-man track was hot.

I'm still looking for a copy of Timeless on vinyl. I have much to trade and/or $. E-mail me.

Ian Johnson: Moods In Free Time

Ian Johnson's "Moods In Free Time" painting exhibit recently debuted at Park Life in San Francisco. Friends in attendance said it was quite a success! I've been a long time fan of Ian's work, both as a solo artist, and as the art director for Western Edition Skateboards. His portraits combine organic elements (of wood) with the perfect amount of color and motion.

Not just a visual artist, Ian is also 1/3 of the group Private School with Hawaii's own Jundax and Da Golden Ray. He is also 1/2 of I.N.K. and founding member of I ran Y. Check out the music links for sound clips and more.

YouTube Flood: Blowed related

I need to figure out how to encode my VHS videos and put them up on YouTube. The old grainy Good Life videos are pretty mind blowing in general, but when you take in to account the ages of these innovators at the time, you'll trip. In the meantime, enjoy these gems...
